Just like Christmas Eve, the origins of Christmas Day are rooted in Babylon. Not only did December 25th mark the ancient Winter Solstice before the Roman shift in time, it also marked the birthday of all pagan sun gods throughout antiquity… beginning with Tammuz of Babylonian fame.
Do your own research. Recall from yesterday’s “Origins of Christmas Eve” article (https://santatizing.wordpress.com/2018/12/24/origins-of-christmas-eve/) that both ancient and modern pagans embrace the legend that the sun dies and is reborn on the Winter Solstice, which corresponds to Nimrod’s death (c. 2167 BC) and him being reborn as the sun god in Tammuz. One of the ways that they picture this is an evergreen tree springing up into new life from a dead tree stump (Yule Log). This is the most ancient and idolatrous root of Christmas Day.
There was also an Egyptian tree custom performed on Ra’s birthday – December 25th. Joseph AmaHura Riverwind shares: “In Ancient Egypt, they decorated trees during the winter solstice and placed a star of Amun-rah or a golden-winged scarab on the top of it. This was a very well-known practice that the Hebrews would have seen during captivity as well as the decorating of houses with green palms which some consider being an origin point for this practice.”
The Catholic Encyclopedia tells us that Sol was the name of the sun god of the largest pagan religious cult, spanning both the Greek and Roman empires. Tertullian—a father of the church—asserted that Sol was not the Christian’s God. The pagan sun worship of Mithraism, with its god Mithra, had a winter festival called “The Nativity” or “The Nativity of the Sun” or “The Nativity of the Unconquered Sun.” The Catholic Encyclopedia admits that the Nativity of the Unconquered Sun had a strong claim for the responsibility of the date of Christmas. The Roman Emperor Constantine mixed pagan solar customs with “The Way,” in order to appease the culture at the time. Historical evidence shows that Constantine was a devout Mithra worshiper. The Encyclopedia Americana says that by the fifth century, the Roman Catholic Church ordered that the birth of Christ be forever observed on December 25th, even though this was the day that the old Roman feast commemorated the birth of Sol (Mithra).
Another way to track the roots and fruits of Christmas Day is to look at the history of the Phrygian cap that Santa Claus wears. Mithra, Tammuz, Chemosh, and Molech all wore the same Phrygian cap as Santa. At the time of the Winter Solstice on ancient calendars (Dec. 25th), they had a public child mass. “Mass” literally means sacrifice in this context. Before the pagan priests stoked up the iron image of “enthroned” Chemosh or Molech with wood and burning pitch, the people participating in the December 25th child mass made long lists of their desires. Then they would recite them to this supposed “god of prosperity” just before they placed their infant children into the red-hot lap of their god with the Phrygian cap.
The Lord our God conveniently left us a clue about what He considers the most detestable practice in His eyes that drives Him far from His sanctuary (you and I). It’s about 25. Check it out!
“And He said to me, ‘Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great abominations which the House of Israel are committing here, so that I would be far from My sanctuary? But yet you will see still greater abominations. … Then He brought me into the inner court of the LORD’S house. And behold, at the entrance to the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were ABOUT TWENTY-FIVE men with their backs to the temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east; and they were prostrating themselves eastward toward the sun” (Ezekiel 8:6,16 NASB).
It had become common practice in the fifth century for worshipers entering St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to turn at the door, put their backs to God’s altar, and bow down to worship the rising sun. Please refer to Ezekiel 8:16 for God’s opinion of this practice. The first recorded evidence of “Christianized” Christmas taking place on December twenty-fifth isn’t found until the time of Constantine in AD 336, which was 11 years after the Council of Nicaea.
How many times have you seen the Lord approximate in Scripture “ABOUT TWENTY-FIVE”? It certainly isn’t common. It’s a clue. The most detestable practice in God’s eyes that drives Him far from His sanctuary – you and I – is about the 25th of December – Christmas Day => https://santatizing.wordpress.com/2015/12/02/its-about-the-25th/.
