Q: DOESN’T COLOSSIANS 2:16-17 GIVE ME THE FREEDOM IN THE SPIRIT TO WORSHIP GOD ANY WAY I WANT?
Christians have long used Colossians 2:16-17 to rationalize why we should no longer celebrate the Lord’s Feast, but in fact this passage actually proves the opposite. When we argue that we can celebrate a holiday (holy day or feast) any way we want, we have tapped into a portion of the truth. “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ” (Colossians 2:16-17 KJV). WE ARE NOT TO JUDGE OTHERS ON HOW THEY CELEBRATE A BIBLICAL FESTIVAL, new moon or Sabbath day. Did you catch that? Paul is assuming that God’s people are celebrating all three of these things that mark God’s peoples weeks, months and years according to His Word. Q: DOES CHRIST OR THE HOLY SPIRIT “FORBID” ANYTHING? Aren’t all things being lawful, but not all profitable?
God does forbid things. Simply look at the Ten Commandments, which is our Marriage Contract/Covenant – Do not steal. Do not commit adultery. Do not be a false witness. Et cetera. Probably more importantly for New Testament (Kingdom) believers is that idolatry is not only forbidden as part of the Big Ten, but as part of the Apostolic Decree in Acts 15. I call these the Essential Commandment for All Believers, because Acts 15:28 NASB tells us: “For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and us to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials.” BTW – These Essential Commandments for All Believers are listed 3 times in Scripture: Acts 15:19-20; Acts 15:28-29; Acts 21:25. The first of the 4 things forbidden in this list has been mistranslated to only mean abstain from food polluted with idols, but it really means to abstain from things contaminated by idols. Q: ISN’T IT SOLELY A MATTER OF CONSCIOUS IN WORSHIPING GOD? So many traditions share pagan origins, for example a dozen roses, but isn’t there grace?
There is grace in some areas, but not when it comes to worshiping God. As baby Christians, God is so very understanding, tolerant, kind, loving and patient about us using mixture to worship Him; but when we mature and want to get closer to Him, more holiness (no mixture) is required. Take for example some extreme examples on how God would not like mixture.
